How the patterns are made

Every template here is drawn by a small program from the pattern's geometry, not traced from photos and not made by an AI image generator. That is what lets each one come in several exact sizes.

What the program does

  • Builds the pattern from its grid (triangles for asanoha, circles for shippo, hexagons for kikko).
  • Lays out stitches on every line: about 3 mm stitches with 1.5 mm gaps, stopping at least 1 mm short of each crossing, and further back where lines meet at a narrow angle, until the stitch tips are at least 1.2 mm apart.
  • Counts the stitches and estimates the thread for the whole panel.
  • Writes a PDF for US Letter and A4 with a 5 cm scale bar.

How it is checked

Before each release every template is rendered at 300 dpi and its scale bar measured; a template more than 0.5 mm off is not published. Every layout is also checked for stitches shorter than 1.5 mm and for stitch tips closer than 1 mm, where two stitches would merge into one. The stitch previews on each page are drawn from the same data as the PDF.

Using the patterns

The templates are free for personal projects and gifts. Please link to the pattern page rather than re-hosting the PDF.
